Azure Governance Foundations - Cloud Governance Framework

The customer was in need for the business’s tolerance for risks when adopting the cloud. The result of the work for the customer has been a series of policy statements that should guide the architecture of any solution deployed to the cloud.

⸻ Customer Challenge

Why Cloud Governance Framework?

Adopting the cloud poses different challenges to any organization – threats to security, regulatory requirements, consistency issues, and cost managing concerns which must be addressed through a robust governance model.

A cloud governance strategy that fits the needs of the organizations can provide a framework for:

➞  Enabling multiple teams to use the cloud in a secure and consistent way through well-defined standards;

➞  Objectively measuring the adoption process across different verticals through well-defined metrics and indicators;

➞  Predictable infrastructure costs that can support business in planning and budgeting;

➞  Ensures security best practices are used and contingency plans are in place.

➞  Optimizing the architecture of cloud-based applications to make use of the optimal cloud services;

➞  Clear identification of roles and responsibilities in organizational cloud management

An effective cloud governance model is intrinsic to the company it was built for, there is no silver bullet or shortcuts that can be taken when defining it. There are, however, important elements to take into consideration that are horizontal to cloud governance at all levels that should be taken into consideration.

How Did MobiLab Support LANXESS?

MobiLab put together a team of cloud governance specialists an approached the tasks by understanding the target audience as well as LANXESS’s current processes and know-how to achieve a governance/organization fit.

A key challenge was that the main stakeholders were split across multiple departments and had diverging processes and tools in place which needed to be taken into consideration when defining policies and designing their implementation. MobiLab had the goal in mind to:

➞  to help and enable the stakeholders, not to limit or control them by a Cloud Governance Framework;

➞   understand their needs, know-how, and existing processes that would be central to developing a governance model;

➞  present all governance work in an agile work methodology to gather feedback before reaching a final state.

Within 3 months of work, MobiLab delivered successfully (on time and within budget) the complete Cloud Governance Framework in a state that was ready for implementation by the customer.
